What we do

Since its inception in October 2006, House of Mercy Children’s Home has been actively involved in various social activities including outreach to homeless street children and child scavengers, providing mobile kitchen for homeless street children and mobile school for child street beggars.

Child Street Beggar Programme
House of Mercy Children’s Home currently has a programme that targets child street beggars including children of beggars and disabled persons at the Oko Baba Destitute Camp at Ebute Meta in Lagos.

The programme has two main objectives, the first of which is to raise public awareness of child street beggars and the second to provide informal education for about 200 child street beggars from Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 1pm.

Of the 200 child street beggars that attend House of Mercy School, a total number of 50 have enrolled in formal education system for the 2009-2010 school year.

Homeless Street Children Programme
Street Children are in need and in danger
These children are exploited by adults on the streets. They need decent and safe accommodation as an alternative to the dangers of the street.

The Street does not care
Street children rarely know someone who truly cares for them personally. They need someone to spend time with them and keep up on their individual needs; someone with whom they can build a safe and lasting relationship.

The Street provides no family
Many children have no parents or relatives and they lack parental care and adult supervision. These children need to be taken care of in a decent home with responsible house parents and adults to take care of them.  They need a family and moral environment in which to mature safely.

The aim of House of Mercy Children’s Home is to:
· Provide them with the opportunity of a safe shelter.
· Give them an address to belong to.
· Provide them with opportunities to acquire educational or vocational skills.
· Assist them in their emotional and spiritual development.
· Help them to get in contact with their natural family and reunite them if possible.
· Assist them to settle down independently in society.
